It is an older one but I thought I would repost it today just because I always think of this poem on a day like today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The woman walks<br \/>\nAlong in a crowded street<br \/>\nSurrounded by people<br \/>\nYet so alone<br \/>\nA scarf like a noose<br \/>\nWrapped around her frail neck<br \/>\nHands shoved deep<br \/>\nInto her pockets<br \/>\nShe only looks<br \/>\nAt the ground<br \/>\nThe rhythmic step of her feet<br \/>\nHer wide hat<br \/>\nShields her from the world<br \/>\nShe ignores them<br \/>\nIs afraid of them<br \/>\nShe wraps herself tighter<br \/>\nIn what is safe and comforting<br \/>\nAnd is content in isolation<br \/>\nSo she walks along<br \/>\nIn a crowd of people<br \/>\nWithout faces<br \/>\nThe wind picks up<br \/>\nFor a moment it whispers<br \/>\nA soft secret in her ear<br \/>\nA riddle told to fast<br \/>\nAs the wind<br \/>\nCarried her hat away<br \/>\nThe woman let out<br \/>\nA short little gasp<br \/>\nAs her barrier was removed<br \/>\nShe reached forward<br \/>\nFingertips grazing it<br \/>\nJust out of reach<br \/>\nAs it bounces and rolls<br \/>\nAlong the dirty street<br \/>\nShe chases in vain<br \/>\nAnd no one will help<br \/>\nFinally out of breath<br \/>\nAnd out of heart<br \/>\nShe gives up<br \/>\nStanding in the crowd<br \/>\nPuffs of winter breath<br \/>\nClouding before her as she watches<br \/>\nHer hat dance away<br \/>\nHer hair billowing about her<br \/>\nWatching with sad longing eyes<br \/>\nShe stands still among thousands<br \/>\nAs she turns to leave<br \/>\nA tap on her shoulder<br \/>\nShe turns in surprise<br \/>\nA man stands before her<br \/>\nHer hat in hand<br \/>\nHolding it out towards her<br \/>\nA smile but no words<br \/>\nShe takes it and offers<br \/>\nA shy little smile in return<br \/>\nAs she starts to pull it<br \/>\nBack into place<br \/>\nHe reaches out to stop her<br \/>\n<em>Why<\/em><br \/>\nHe asks her<br \/>\n<em>You have such a pretty face<br \/>\n<\/em>He smiles and lets go<br \/>\nGiving an impartial shrug<br \/>\n<em>You don\u2019t need to hide<br \/>\n<\/em><em>You are beautiful you know<br \/>\n<\/em>He leaves her with<br \/>\nHis few soft words<br \/>\nAnd a knowing smile<br \/>\nShe stands there<br \/>\nHat in hand<br \/>\nFilled with his offerings<br \/>\nHer eyes are wide<br \/>\nAnd her hands slightly quake<br \/>\nShe lifts the hat<br \/>\nLooking at it now<br \/>\nAnd tosses it away<br \/>\nShe watches it<br \/>\nFlit and dance in the sky<br \/>\nGone forever<br \/>\nShe smiles slightly<br \/>\nThe stranger\u2019s knowing smile<br \/>\nShe doesn\u2019t need it anymore<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Windy, cloudy, stormy days always remind me of this poem.
