Hands shaking as fingernails bite
\nInto the palms of his hands
\nClenched into tight fists
\nTrying to suffocate his rage
\nChoking on words which burn
\nIn his throat like poison
\nThis bile in the belly of a monster
\nBelongs not to a demon but a man
\nWith eyes that burn with anger
\nSmoldering like embers in dark sockets
\nEven as their fire dwindles
\nInto the soft glow of feigned comfort
\nThey have the power to burn
\nPower to set the world on fire
\nBut here and now
\nHis rage has no place
\nExcept in the quiver of his fist
\nAnd the monstrosity of his eyes
\nHe lets out a long forced breath
\nLetting his body go slack
\nAnd his eyes slowly drift closed
\nWraps a controlled arm around
\nHis little girl\u2019s shoulders
\nWhich shake with quiet little sobs
\nBringing her in close
\nTo shelter her from the world
\nThat took the light from his eyes
\nWrung out his heart until all that was left
\nWas this bitterness, this rage
\nThis monster
\nThat even as this wrath builds in his chest
\nHe pushes it back down
\nForcing a gentle, unnatural smile on to his face
\nHolding his daughter as she cries
\nTurning his hollowed out chest
\nWhere his heart should have been
\nInto a cove of resounding calm
\nTo harbor her heart and make sure
\nThat hers, unlike his, would survive
\nThe cold abrasive storm
\nAs he held her tight in his arms
\nLooking ahead with dead determined eyes
\nShe would survive
\nEven if that meant what was left of him died
\nHe slowly unclenched his fist
\nWhich had gathered in rage
\nOpening it out of love
\nTo wipe the tears from her face
\nAnd with a calm and controlled voice
\nHinted with the melancholy
\nOf humanity\u2019s cacophony
\nHe whispered in her ear
