Today I shook
\nThe hand of a man
\nWho truly has suffered
\nBut lived his life
\nHe is from Sudan
\nOn his face
\nA story is told
\nSun made wrinkles
\nMake him look old
\nHis dark complexion
\nShows who he is
\nA Lost Boy
\nHe saw death
\nBut refused to die
\nHe fought for his life
\nAnd earned every second
\nHis parents shot down
\nRight before his five year old eyes
\nSo he turned and ran
\nAnd never looked back
\nThrough starvation and thirst
\nHe walked the hard land
\nOver one thousand miles
\nEthiopia, Sudan, Kenya
\nAll called home
\nBut never truly settled
\nHis entire past gone
\nLost in gun shots and screams
\nBlue rivers run red
\nBut still this boy ran
\nTrying to keep up his head
\nTrying not to fall in the sand
\nHis fellow comrades
\nThe other lost children
\nTrek along desert ridges
\nAcross barren lands
\nNowhere in mind
\nJust trying to survive
\nCarried everything on his back
\nHis history and hardships
\nA burden weighed down
\nSomething pushing from behind
\nTo keep him from falling down
\nSo many fallen who never get back up
\nHis name on a board
\nThat guided his destiny
\nBrought him from nothing
\nBut gave him everything
\nFrom Kenya to America
\nHe traveled at last
\nTo freedom, a home
\nBut her could never forget his past
\nSo he took what he had
\nAnd made something of it
\nFinally coming to our school
\nTo tell us his story
\nOf a time so sad
\nHe stands here before us
\nShowing his burden
\nSharing his life
\nAt the end of it all
\nI shook the hand of a man
\nWho had earned his way
\nRough calloused hands
\nWith a strong hard grip
\nThat never let go
